Batavia Polo Club

About BPC & Polo

The Batavia Polo Club (BPC) started on its beautiful eight hectares site south of Jagorawi Golf & Country Club in March 2003. Last year we moved from our Arena Field to our Main Field overlooking the mountains and this year we will extend it to almost full size and open a Pendopo Clubhouse. The site now includes a main polo field, an arena polo field, a stick-and-ball field, stables, paddocks and extensive ride-out trails.

The club welcomes riders and polo players of all levels of experience - whether completely new to riding, looking for leisure riding around the JGCC grounds, wishing to learn to play arena and field polo or practice their skills.

Our vision for this year is to attract new members, increase the number of trained polo ponies, improve the quality of our polo fields and raise the standards of our amenities and services to levels that will attract newcomers to polo and persuade players from Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and beyond to compete in sponsored polo matches. In pursuit of this vision we will welcome players and horses from other locations to join in club chukkas at Jagorawi throughout the polo season.

Polo is a game for high achievers and their families. Teams sponsored by wealthy patrons compete for Gold Cups, National Prizes and World Trophies in Argentina, USA, Europe, Asia and Austalasia. Less well favoured teams compete on their home and neighbours’ grounds with friends and rivals just for the challenges and the thrills of this most exciting of King of Sports.

A friend from Texas who learned to play polo in Jakarta, had the following answers to questions about the game:

What attracts you?
The horses and the action. It is an incredibly fast paced game that requires full concentration while playing. You can't be worried about business or other commitments. It is high-speed chess with an incredible aerobic workout. The competition is also fantastic. It is a thinking game. If you can think, anticipate, and react faster than your opponent you have a better chance of winning. It's a physical game, but you don't necessarily have to be big and strong to succeed. I once played against an Argentine pro with 7 goal handicap in the UK who was barely 158 cm and maybe 50 kgs. He easily rode off guys who weighed twice as much and were a lot taller. We have had several women players start here in Indonesia who have gone on to play all over the world. I also like the sound of the horses hoofs when they are all racing about.

What do you like better, the polo or the horses?
The horses. The horses are the heroes of the game. When you get a good one it is truly amazing. The good ones understand the game. My first horse was one of two teachers I had that really taught me how to play. She knew when I was doing something wrong and wouldn't let me do it. But I don't want to underrate the game either. I have been fortunate to have been able to play polo in Australia, the USA, UK, Malaysia, and Brunei. I have played with Princes in England with teams flying in by helicopter and Rolls-Royces driving around and stockmen in Australia who drive up in battered old trucks and unload some of the most beautiful horses you can imagine. The polo community is a wonderful group of people who share a common interest and open their arms to like-minded people all over the world. It is absolutely the greatest game in the world.

The day-to-day management of the club is under Polo Manager Eddy Yunarko (HP: 0811902426). Following training at Bukit Sentul he was sent for further training to polo stables in Australia and England. He is helped by two experienced Stable Supervisors Dudung and Wartono who are learned their polo skills in Indonesia.
